Coronado is located in the middle of the San Diego Bay and is connected to Downtown San Diego via the Coronado Bridge built in 1969, prior to the bridge residents traveled by means of ferry service. The northwestern half of Coronado is a Naval base "North Island", including a large Navy Air facility and the west coast's active fleet. The southeastern half of the peninsula is residential housing, hotels and small shopping areas, as well as the historic Hotel Del Coronado, built in 1888 and long considered one of the world's top resorts. It is listed as a National Historic Landmark and appeared in several major films. The city of Coronado is a very popular tourist destination for San Diegans, other Americans, and International visitors alike.
